Case Study - Food Systems Pro Bono
In Spring of 2025, I co-led an expert consultant roundtable consulting to Cityseed, a comprehensive food-systems nonprofit based in New Haven, CT. Cityseed operates farmers markets and food systems distribution, food entrepreneur incubation services, and rents out a full-scale commercial kitchen space to area food businesses. The Yale Alumni Nonprofit Association recruited me and a couple other expert consultants to help Cityseed think about its expansion strategy and new revenue resources.
“I advised CitySeed about how to build the brand and events to capitalize on food’s ability to bring people together and motivate dedicated engagement from investors and donors.”
I consulted with Cityseed on organizational strategy, advising that they needed a new senior program person to reduce management duties on the Executive Director. As Cityseed recognized, the Executive Director needed to focus on relationship building, strategy, and development. I was also able to help them generalize the thinking about this investment in a senior program staffperson; providing a framework for them to invest in priorities instead of focusing on perpetuating current activities simply because those activities’ existence. Finally, I advised Cityseed about how to build the brand and events to capitalize on food’s ability to bring people together and motivate dedicated engagement from investors and donors. I provided examples about potential organizational partners’ participation in the food ecosystem and the opportunity to involved others in co-branded hands on food events and partnerships.
Cityseed now has the strategic and operational guideposts to move forward as it furthers its expansion and scales its organization in the food systems space. It will be exciting to see the leadership there grow the organization and succeed.
